Thailand signals possible ceasefire in border dispute with Cambodia

21 December 2025 13:35

Thailand has not ruled out the possibility of establishing a ceasefire in its border conflict with Cambodia following the upcoming special meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers in Kuala Lumpur, the country’s joint press centre on the Cambodia border situation said, TASS reports.

“Ceasefire can only be achieved if it is primarily based on Thailand’s military assessment. Since Cambodia initiated the clashes, it must first clearly demonstrate sincerity in seeking a ceasefire. From the outset, Thailand has expressed a desire for genuine and sustainable peace, while ensuring the safety and protection of its citizens," the statement reads.

The press centre said that through the planned meeting, Thailand seeks a clear demonstration of genuine intent from Cambodia to allow discussion of approaches to de-escalation along the border.

The special ASEAN foreign ministers meeting was initiated by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and will take place on December 22 in Kuala Lumpur. The Thai press centre emphasised that the meeting will provide an opportunity to hear the positions of both Thailand and Cambodia and to discuss potential approaches to reducing tensions along the Thailand-Cambodia border.
