The Economist: Europe can sustain only short conflict without US support
07 January 2026 09:35
Europe would be able to wage only a short-term conflict against Russia without the support of the United States, according to an analysis published by The Economist, a British magazine.
“Any theory of victory for a NATO without American troops begins with an acknowledgment that Europe can fight a short war but not a long one,” the article says.
According to the publication, without heavy transport aircraft, airborne command-and-control assets, satellite intelligence, and large arsenals provided by the United States, European forces would exhaust their capacity to conduct high-intensity combat operations within just a few weeks.
