The Economist: Trump’s return to White House poses "unacceptable risks"

01 November 2024 21:58

The British magazine The Economist warns that the potential return of former U.S. President Donald Trump to the White House presents “unacceptable risks” for both the United States and the world.

This assessment appears in an editorial published by the weekly ahead of the upcoming U.S. presidential election on November 5.

“Presidents do not have to be saints, and we hope that disaster will be avoided during Trump's second presidency. However, Trump poses an unacceptable risk to America and the world. If The Economist had a vote, we would cast it for [Democratic candidate Kamala] Harris,” the article states.

While the publication acknowledges Harris’s shortcomings, such as “indecisiveness and uncertainty,” it argues that she represents stability and is unlikely to trigger a large-scale catastrophe. Conversely, the authors express concern that if Trump regains power, “the economy, the rule of law, and international peace will be at stake.”

The editorial highlights that Russia is “gaining the upper hand” in Ukraine, and the escalating conflict in the Middle East could further entangle the United States. “These conflicts will present challenges for Trump that he did not face during his first term. His unfounded promises to achieve peace in Ukraine within a day and his unabashed support for an Israeli offensive are far from reassuring. Even more troubling is his dismissive attitude towards alliances,” The Economist warns, expressing fears that Trump’s presidency could jeopardize NATO.

In addition to the geopolitical risks associated with a potential second term for Trump, the publication also cites the possibility of a devastating trade war for the U.S. economy and an unprecedented escalation of internal divisions within the country.
