The Spectator: Prolonged war could threaten Zelenskyy’s hold on power
29 April 2026 23:45
The prolonged armed conflict is increasing internal tensions in Ukraine and could jeopardise President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s position, writes the British magazine The Spectator.
The publication notes that the country is going through a difficult period, including widespread power outages, nationwide mobilisation, and a shortage of manpower in the armed forces despite an increase in conscription age. The situation is further aggravated by mass desertions.
According to polls cited in the article, only around 20% of Ukrainians are prepared to vote for Zelenskyy in the next elections. “Discontent on the home front may, in the end, be a more important driver of peace than anything that happens on the stalemated battlefield,” the article says.
