Thousands gather to bid farewell to iconic singer Bonnie Tyler

16 August 2026 15:11

A coffin containing the body of singer Bonnie Tyler, whose real name was Gaynor Sullivan, has been brought to Swansea in southern Wales, where thousands of people gathered in the streets to pay their final respects, The Guardian reports.

Crowds sang “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” the song that brought Bonnie Tyler worldwide fame. Fans lined the streets of her hometown to honor the singer as her coffin was taken back to her former home.

Many fans stood along Newton Road in Mumbles, Swansea, watching the procession as the singer’s coffin was carried inside. The coffin was draped in the Welsh flag and accompanied by a framed photograph of the singer, according to the report.

Fans threw flowers onto the hearse and applauded as it passed.

Bonnie Tyler’s funeral service will be held on Monday, August 17, at Swansea Minster (Church of St Mary’s). Admission will be limited to invited guests, but the service will be broadcast in nearby St David’s Square.

British singer Bonnie Tyler, best known for the hits “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “Holding Out for a Hero,” died at the age of 75. Her death came after she was hospitalized in May with a ruptured appendix and bowel perforation. The singer spent a month in an induced coma and regained consciousness only in mid-June.
