Thousands of German cars stranded on Lamu island
21 March 2026 15:55
Approximately 4,000 German-made vehicles, including Porsches and Volkswagens, have accumulated on the Kenyan island of Lamu after their cargo ships were forced to change course, according to German media outlet Bild.
The cars were originally being transported from Japan to Dubai when the vessels were rerouted to Lamu. Another ship carrying thousands more vehicles is expected to arrive on the island shortly.
Authorities have not yet provided details on the cause of the diversion or how long the vehicles are expected to remain on Lamu.
The unexpected accumulation of luxury and passenger vehicles has raised concerns about local logistics and storage capacity.
