Threats against Trump and US officials reach record levels, Secret Service warns

The number of threats targeting individuals protected by the US Secret Service, including President Donald Trump, has reached an unprecedented level, according to a senior agency official.

Speaking during a closed briefing for journalists, the official said the growing volume of threats has become a major concern for the agency, CNBC reports.

According to data cited by the MS NOW journalists’ pool, approximately 10,000 threats against government officials and Supreme Court justices have been recorded since the beginning of 2026. This represents a 40% increase compared with the same period last year.

The Secret Service has also reported a significant rise in cases involving the involuntary psychiatric hospitalisation of individuals considered potentially dangerous. The agency said such cases have increased tenfold.

Secret Service Deputy Director Matthew Quinn said the agency is particularly concerned about the possible use of drones in attacks against protected individuals.

The warning comes ahead of the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, which is scheduled to take place at the Waldorf Astoria and is expected to be attended by President Trump.

The event was previously postponed from April following a security incident involving California resident Cole Tomas Allen, who allegedly attempted to enter a hall at the Washington Hilton hotel while Trump was present. Allen was stopped by security personnel and later charged with attempted assassination.
