Three people contract monkeypox in Berlin

22 May 2022 09:30

Three cases of infection with monkeypox disease have been registered in Germany's capital Berlin.

The information was confirmed by the RBB24, the public broadcaster of Brandenburg and Berlin on Sunday, RIA Novosti reports.

Earlier, the Berlin Senate Department for Health reported two confirmed cases of monkeypox. The condition of the patients is reportedly stable, and their circle of contacts is currently being established.

Earlier on Friday, the first-ever case of monkeypox in Germany was registered in the city of Munich.

Monkeypox is a rare infection that's mainly spread by wild animals in parts of west or central Africa. It can be caught from infected wild animals in parts of the west and central Africa. It's thought to be spread by rodents, such as rats, mice and squirrels.

One can catch monkeypox from an infected animal if he/she is bitten or it touches his/her blood, body fluids, spots, blisters or scabs.

It may also be possible to catch monkeypox by eating meat from an infected animal that has not been cooked thoroughly, or by touching other products from infected animals (such as animal skin or fur).

Monkeypox can also be spread through:

  • touching clothing, bedding or towels used by someone with the monkeypox rash
  • touching monkeypox skin blisters or scabs
  • the coughs or sneezes of a person with the monkeypox rash
