Timeturk: Political uncertainty turns Iraqi streets into battlefield
Political uncertainty has provoked a new crisis and turned the streets into a battlefield in Iraq.
Tensions sparked after the statements by Shia Muslim leader Muqtada al-Sadr have led to attacks on state institutions and structures backed by Iran, the Turkish news service Timeturk reports.
As reported, protests and attacks, especially in the Green Zone, ended with statements by Muqtada Sadr.
The conflict in Iraq, the danger of civil war and a split have brought the signed agreements of 1926-1946 back to the agenda.
Kirkuk and Mosul, which remained within the borders of the National Pact, were left based on the condition of ensuring their territorial integrity. An agreement signed in 1926 in Ankara gives Türkiye the right to intervene militarily in the affairs of Mosul and Kirkuk in the event of continued unrest in Iraq. The Istanbul Agreement, signed in 1946, also mentions Türkiye's rights in the face of partition or the region being taken over by illegal organisations.
