Russia closes Polish Consulate in retaliation over Krakow closure
Russia announced on July 11 that it will withdraw its consent for the operation of the Polish Consulate General in Kaliningrad starting August 29, 2025, in response to Poland’s recent decision to close the Russian Consulate General in Krakow.
The move follows Poland’s withdrawal of consent for the Russian consulate’s functioning in Krakow as of June 30, 2025. Moscow described Poland’s actions as “unjustified and hostile,” accusing Warsaw of reducing the Russian consular presence on Polish territory under what it called “spurious pretexts," Caliber.Az reports per the Russian government website.
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the chargé d’affaires a.i. of Poland in Moscow on July 11 to deliver the note outlining the retaliatory measure.
Russian officials emphasised that Moscow “proceeds from the premise that no unfriendly attack against our country will remain without a proper response and consequences,” signaling a further deterioration in bilateral relations.
