Top democrats, supporters question Biden's 2024 re-election bid Amid concerns about viability

12 July 2024 02:32

US President Joe Biden is facing renewed doubts about his re-election chances from influential figures like Nancy Pelosi and George Clooney, as well as two Senate Democrats.

Former House Speaker Pelosi, a longtime ally, suggested on MSNBC that Biden needs to quickly decide whether to stay in the 2024 race, though she stopped short of saying she wanted him to run, Caliber.Az reports citing foreign media.

Hollywood star Clooney, who previously supported Biden, withdrew his endorsement in a New York Times opinion piece, stating Biden is no longer the same man he was in 2020. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has privately indicated openness to another Democratic candidate, despite publicly reiterating his support for Biden.

Senator Peter Welch explicitly called for Biden to withdraw in a recent op-ed, becoming the first Democratic senator to do so. A major donor mentioned that Democratic leaders plan to express their concerns after the NATO summit, highlighting growing anger among lawmakers and donors, and increased pressure on down-ballot candidates.

The Abandon Biden Campaign urged Americans to call for Biden to step aside, though it also criticized Trump's "culture of hate." Pelosi's remarks, which disregarded Biden's insistence on staying in the race, seemed to signal a new wave of calls from Democrats for him to exit.

For nearly two weeks, Biden has tried to prevent defections among Democratic lawmakers, donors, and allies concerned he might lose to Republican Donald Trump. Biden attributed his poor debate performance to a bad night, asserting he will remain in the race and defeat Trump.

Pelosi advised colleagues with concerns to hold off on airing them during the NATO summit. She described Biden's summit remarks as "spectacular" but declined to definitively say she wanted him to run, urging him to decide soon.

Biden's campaign chair and senior advisers will brief Senate Democrats on July 11. In response to Pelosi and Clooney, Biden's campaign highlighted his commitment to staying in the race and defeating Trump.

Despite Pelosi's support at the NATO summit, other Democrats echoed her concerns. Senator Richard Blumenthal expressed doubt about Biden's ability to win. Vice President Kamala Harris, the frontrunner to replace Biden, emphasized the election's importance at a Dallas event, where the crowd chanted, "Four More Years!"

In his opinion piece, Clooney criticized Biden's current state, suggesting Democrats won't win with him and predicting losses in the House and Senate. Democrats remain divided over whether to support Biden or urge him to step aside.

US Representative Earl Blumenauer is the ninth House Democrat to call for Biden to end his re-election campaign, though public defections are still limited.

Biden, seeking to shift the narrative, has rallied support from loyal communities, including Black Democratic lawmakers and voters. He received enthusiastic applause from labor leaders at an AFL-CIO executive council meeting, discussing their commitment to defeating Trump. Biden highlighted issues like high rents, expensive groceries, and housing shortages as key focuses going forward.

Labor support was crucial in Biden's 2020 victory in states like Michigan, Nevada, and Pennsylvania.
