Top diplomat Borrell stresses unity as key to EU's survival, global influence
European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, has emphasized that the EU's survival depends on the unity of its member states.
In remarks made during an informal meeting of EU leaders in Budapest, Borrell highlighted the importance of overcoming internal divisions to strengthen the EU’s global standing, Caliber.Az reports citing the European Union's official website.
“The only recipe for Europe to survive is to be more united. To build a stronger Europe, a sovereign Europe, able to face the challenges of the world without outsourcing our security to anyone else. We have to provide our own security, certainly counting on the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), but building more capacities,” the EU foreign policy chief said.
He stressed that Europe must focus on creating its own security infrastructure, which requires significant investment not just in defence, but also in technology, to ensure its independence and sovereignty.
“If you are not at the table, you will be on the menu,” Borrell warned. “If you are not at the table of the geopolitical game, you will be on the menu.”
Borrell also underscored that Ukraine’s place in the geopolitical conversation is crucial. “The same thing can be said about Ukraine. Ukraine has to be at the table, not on the menu. So, we have to continue supporting independence, sovereignty of Ukraine. Whatever happens, we have to continue fulfilling our commitments with Ukraine.”
