Top Finnish official under investigation for treason, misconduct

Secretary General of the Finnish Parliament Antti Pelttari is under criminal investigation for suspected treason and official misconduct.

The investigation centres on allegations that Pelttari disclosed classified information pertaining to national security during his time as Director of the Finnish Security and Intelligence Service, a position he held from 2011 to 2024, Caliber.Az reports via Finnish media. 

Authorities are reportedly treating the case as a potential breach of state secrets laws, which carry a maximum prison sentence of four years. 

Pelttari noted that the suspicions are linked to his alleged failure to restrict access to sensitive intelligence within SUPO, allowing certain former employees to view confidential material. He has denied the allegations. The case has garnered significant attention due to its potential ties to an alleged Russian information operation in the summer of 2023. Sources familiar with the investigation suggest that Finnish authorities are probing links between SUPO personnel and Russian informants during that period.
