Trio wins Nobel Prize in medicine 2025 for immune system research
The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi for their groundbreaking research on peripheral immune tolerance.
The trio’s work led to the identification of regulatory T cells, often described as the immune system’s “security guards.” Their discoveries have opened a new field of research and paved the way for potential medical treatments, Caliber.Az reports per the Nobel Prize website.
These findings are now being applied in clinical trials with the aim of developing therapies for autoimmune diseases, enhancing cancer treatments, and preventing serious complications following stem cell transplants.
The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institutet highlighted the significance of this research in improving understanding of how the immune system balances defense against disease while avoiding attacks on the body itself.
