Trump accuses Iran of hacking campaign site

11 August 2024 12:24

The campaign of US ex-President Donald Trump has announced that recent internal communications were hacked by foreign entities.

Politico was the first to report the breach, having received emails from an anonymous source containing documents from the Trump campaign, Caliber.Az reports citing the foreign media.

The campaign attributed the leak to "foreign sources hostile to the United States" and referenced a Microsoft report indicating that Iran is targeting the 2024 election.

Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung stated, “These documents were illegally acquired from foreign entities hostile to the United States, with the aim of disrupting the 2024 election and creating chaos within our democratic process.”

Cheung highlighted that a Microsoft report revealed Iranian hackers had “breached the account of a ‘high-ranking official’” in the Trump campaign in June 2024. Following an assassination attempt on Trump at a Pennsylvania rally last month, the Biden administration alleged that Iran had threatened the former president, but Iran’s Foreign Ministry dismissed these claims as “malicious.” Cheung pointed out the coincidental timing of the campaign hack and the “Iranian plot to assassinate President Trump” around the same period as the Butler, PA incident.

Cheung stated, “The Iranians know that President Trump will end their reign of terror just as he did during his first four years in office. Any media or news outlet that republishes these documents or internal communications is aiding America’s enemies and doing exactly what they want.”
