Trump accuses USAID of large-scale fraud schemes

19 March 2025 12:14

US President Donald Trump has accused the US Agency for International Development (USAID) of being involved in large-scale fraudulent schemes.

Speaking in an interview with foreign media, Trump expressed his concerns about the agency's operations, Caliber.Az reports.

He criticised the agency, stating that while it is presented as a benevolent organisation, it is actually riddled with corruption. Trump also remarked that the Democratic Party has shown little interest in addressing these alleged wrongdoings, instead opposing the measures his administration has taken to shut down the agency.

Trump pointed out that while Democrats often claim constitutional violations, they rarely address the question of where billions of dollars have disappeared. He suggested that the Democrats are unwilling to investigate the matter.

Furthermore, Trump condemned a recent ruling by a federal district court in Maryland, which deemed his decisions to limit USAID's operations and dismiss several of its employees as unlawful. He argued that the judge should have focused on investigating the missing funds instead.

Meanwhile, a federal judge has blocked the Trump administration's efforts to shut down the US Agency for International Development (USAID), citing potential violations of the US Constitution. Judge Theodore Chuang ruled that actions taken by Elon Musk’s Department for Government Efficiency (Doge) to dismantle the agency were unconstitutional.

“These actions harmed not only plaintiffs but also the public interest,” Chuang stated, ordering the restoration of USAID's systems and halting employee terminations. However, reinstatement of employees on leave was not mandated. This case was filed by 26 unnamed USAID employees who accused Musk of implementing a “reckless slash-and-burn pattern.” Musk's team argued his role was advisory, but the judge disagreed.

The ruling is a significant blow to the Trump administration, which criticized it as a "miscarriage of justice" and vowed to appeal. Norm Eisen, representing the plaintiffs, called it a "milestone in pushing back on Musk and Doge's illegality."
