Trump administration orders Afghan refugees to leave US within a week Or face deportation

The Trump administration has issued orders for Afghan refugees who legally entered the United States after the 2021 Taliban takeover to depart within seven days or face deportation and potential legal action, according to multiple reports.

The calls for self-deportation align with President Donald Trump’s ongoing efforts to enforce stricter immigration policies, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.

Trump, who had previously pledged to initiate the largest mass deportation operation in U.S. history, has already overseen the detention and deportation of thousands since taking office.

U.S. forces withdrew from Afghanistan in August 2021, marking the end of a 20-year military presence. As the Taliban quickly regained control of the country, many Afghans, particularly those who worked with the U.S. government, fled fearing retribution.

To seek refuge, many applied for Special Immigrant Visas (SIVs), asylum, or Temporary Protected Status (TPS), which protected them from deportation. However, the Trump administration is now moving to terminate TPS protections for Afghan nationals, which could lead to their deportation back to Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.

Reports indicate that DHS has been issuing seven-day self-deportation notices to various individuals, including those who entered the U.S. through legal programs like humanitarian parole. Afghan refugees in places such as Raleigh, North Carolina, have confirmed receiving such notices, with some fearing for their safety if they return to Afghanistan.

One migrant, interviewed by WRAL, shared a "Notice of Termination of Parole" email, stating that his "parole will terminate 7 days from this notice," and warned of potential law enforcement actions if he failed to leave. The individual, who is seeking asylum and holds an I-94 visa, expressed concerns about returning to Afghanistan, stating that doing so would be akin to a "suicide mission."

Other recipients of similar notices include U.S. citizen and immigration attorney Nicole Micheroni, who reported being told by DHS, "It is time for you to leave the United States." According to a senior DHS official, the emails were specifically sent to those involved in parole cases.

On April 18, the DHS began enforcing the Alien Registration Requirement (ARR), which mandates that illegal immigrants register with the government within 30 days to avoid penalties.
