Trump and Xi Jinping begin expanded talks at White House

US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping have moved from a one-on-one meeting to expanded talks involving senior officials from both countries in the Oval Office, according to the White House press pool.

The Chinese delegation includes Vice Premier He Lifeng, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu, Politburo Standing Committee member Cai Qi, Commerce Minister Wang Wentao and Chinese Ambassador to the United States Xie Feng.

The US delegation includes Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.

Xi arrived in the United States on September 23. Trump personally greeted the Chinese leader as he stepped off his plane at Joint Base Andrews near Washington.

US presidents rarely personally meet foreign leaders at the aircraft upon their arrival in the United States. One notable precedent was Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, who was greeted by President Dwight Eisenhower at Andrews Air Force Base on September 15, 1959.
