Trump announces formation of “Board of Peace” for Gaza

16 January 2026 13:02

US President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that the “Board of Peace” for Gaza has been formed to oversee post-war plans.

“It is my great honor to announce that the PEACE COUNCIL has been formed. Members of the Council will be announced soon, but I can confidently say that this is the greatest and most prestigious Council ever assembled, at any time, anywhere,” Caliber.Az quotes Trump as saying.

Almost 90 minutes later, Trump stated that “we have OFFICIALLY entered the next phase of Gaza’s 20-Point Peace Plan,” citing special envoy Steve Witkoff.

“As Chairman of the Board of Peace, I am backing a newly appointed Palestinian Technocratic Government, the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, supported by the Board’s High Representative, to govern Gaza during its transition,” he wrote on Truth Social.

According to the president, with support from Egypt, Türkiye, and Qatar, the US will secure a comprehensive demilitarisation agreement with Hamas, including the surrender of all weapons and the dismantling of every tunnel.

On January 14, Witkoff announced the news of the second phase, “moving from ceasefire to demilitarisation, technocratic governance, and reconstruction,” in a post on X. He added that Hamas is expected to “fully comply with its obligations, including the immediate return of the final deceased hostage.”

The “Board of Peace” is set to deploy an international security force once Hamas disarms its militants and Israel withdraws its military from the Gaza Strip. Under the 20-point peace plan, the board is listed as point nine.

The plan also bars any long-term Israeli occupation of Gaza and stipulates that Israel will not annex additional territory.

It further outlines that if the Palestinian Authority meets reform requirements, a path toward Palestinian statehood would be established. The plan’s final point tasks the US with facilitating dialogue between Israel and Gaza.
