Trump announces major trade deal news conference
US President Donald Trump has announced a major news conference scheduled for May 8 in the Oval Office, where he is expected to unveil details of a significant trade agreement.
"Big News Conference tomorrow morning at 10:00 A.M. [18:00 GMT +4 - ed.], The Oval Office, concerning a major trade deal with representatives of a big, and highly respected, country. The first of many!!!" Trump wrote on True Social, Caliber.Az reports.
The announcement comes as Trump’s administration intensifies trade negotiations following a series of sweeping tariff measures. Since April 2, the American leader has imposed a 10% tariff on most countries, with additional higher rates targeting specific trading partners. Those higher tariffs have since been suspended for 90 days.
Trump has also enacted 25% tariffs on autos, steel, and aluminium, along with the same rate on imports from Canada and Mexico, and a 145% tariff on Chinese goods.
In recent days, top US officials have held a series of meetings with international trade representatives. On May 6, Trump said his team would review potential trade agreements over the next two weeks to determine which to approve.
Last week, he hinted at ongoing negotiations with India, South Korea, and Japan, describing them as “potential” trade deals that may be finalised soon.
