Trump announces planned 25% tariff on EU cars, trucks

01 May 2026 20:29

U.S. President Donald Trump has said he will raise tariffs on automobiles and trucks imported from the European Union to 25%, citing what he described as the EU’s failure to comply with a previously agreed trade deal.

In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump wrote that the measure would take effect next week and said there would be no tariffs for vehicles produced in the United States, Caliber.Az reports.

“I am pleased to announce that, based on the fact the European Union is not complying with our fully agreed to Trade Deal, next week I will be increasing Tariffs charged to the European Union for Cars and Trucks coming into the United States. The Tariff will be increased to 25%," he wrote.

He said that it is fully understood and agreed that if European manufacturers produce cars and trucks in U.S. plants, there will be no tariffs. He added that many automobile and truck factories are currently under construction, with over $100 billion being invested, which he described as a record in the history of car and truck manufacturing.

He further stated that these plants, staffed by American workers, will be opening soon, and claimed that there has never been anything like what is currently happening in the United States.
