Trump claims cartels “rule Mexico”

U.S. President Donald Trump has said that drug cartels effectively control Mexico, linking their alleged influence to the ongoing fentanyl crisis in the United States.

Speaking from the White House on May 8, Trump stated that “we have a problem because the cartels rule Mexico and nobody else. The cartel, they just rule it," Caliber.Az reports. 

He further claimed that “we lose 200,000 people a year through this poison that pours into our country.”

According to Trump, the widespread illegal importation of the synthetic opioid fentanyl into the United States is directly connected to cartel activity operating across the southern border.
