Trump claims NATO allies “wouldn’t even think” of supporting US on Iran
U.S. President Donald Trump has accused NATO allies, including Italy, of failing to stand with the United States on Iran, escalating tensions with European partners in a sharply worded post on Truth Social.
In the post, Trump said that despite what he described as “trillions of dollars” spent by the United States on NATO and allied security, countries such as Italy would not consider becoming involved in confronting what he called a “very serious nuclear threat” from the Islamic Republic of Iran, Caliber.Az reports.
“For decades, we defend them but, when tested, they are not there to defend us, and the rest of the world. Not good!” Trump wrote.
The remarks come amid a deepening diplomatic dispute between Washington and Rome following reports that Italy refused to allow the use of its military bases for a potential U.S. strike against Iran. The disagreement has reportedly strained relations between Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who has defended Italy’s position as consistent with national sovereignty.
Earlier, Trump took aim personally at Meloni, claiming that during the recent G7 Summit she had "begged" him for a photograph. The U.S. president said he agreed only because he "felt sorry for her."
