Trump continues dispute with Pope, says Iran nuclear bomb “absolutely unacceptable”

15 April 2026 10:21

US President Donald Trump has continued his dispute with Pope Leo XIV over the war in Iran, reiterating that Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon is “absolutely unacceptable,” according to a post on Truth Social.

“Will someone please tell Pope Leo that Iran has killed at least 42,000 innocent, completely unarmed, protesters in the last two months, and that for Iran to have a Nuclear Bomb is absolutely unacceptable,” Trump wrote.

Trump began attacking the Pope on April 13, calling him a “terrible foreign policy" expert and repeatedly criticising his remarks. In an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera on April 14, he said the Pope does not understand what he is talking about and should not comment on the war because he has no idea what is happening.

On April 13, Pope Leo XIV stated that he is “not afraid of the Trump administration” and will continue speaking out against the war.
