Trump criticises allies again after meeting NATO secretary general
09 April 2026 10:41
U.S. President Donald Trump’s meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte failed to soften the American leader’s hostile stance toward the alliance’s members, The Guardian reports.
After the talks, Trump once again highlighted existing disagreements within NATO, including issues over Greenland’s status. The U.S. president also stated that “NATO WASN’T THERE WHEN WE NEEDED THEM, AND THEY WON’T BE THERE IF WE NEED THEM AGAIN.”
Following the meeting, Trump’s position on NATO and its allies remained critical, despite Rutte’s diplomatic efforts.
