Trump denies claim Pakistan urged easing of Iran port blockade

20 April 2026 17:26

US President Donald Trump has denied reports that Pakistan’s army chief advised him to reconsider Washington’s blockade on Iranian ports, pushing back against claims that the issue is complicating diplomatic efforts.

Speaking to The Hill, Trump said Pakistan’s Army Chief Asim Munir “didn’t recommend anything on the blockade,” contradicting a report by Reuters that Munir had raised concerns about the measure during discussions.

Trump defended the policy, emphasising its economic impact on Iran.

“The blockade is very powerful, very strong. They lose $500 million a day with the blockade up,” he said. “We control it. They don’t control it.”

The reported disagreement comes as Vice President JD Vance is set to lead a U.S. delegation to Islamabad for potential talks involving Pakistani and Iranian officials.

However, uncertainty remains over whether negotiations will take place. Iran’s Foreign Ministry said on April 20 that “no decision” has been made on holding talks with the United States.
