Trump lauds Erdoğan’s "historic" role in Syria at White House talks with Netanyahu Video
US President Donald Trump has praised Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for his role in Syria following a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House.
Trump highlighted the strong relationship between himself and Erdoğan, noting the significance of Türkiye's involvement in Syria, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
Trump acknowledged Türkiye’s significant presence in Syria, stating that he had told Erdoğan, “You’ve taken it over through surrogates.” He continued, “I said, ‘Congratulations, you’ve done what nobody’s been able to do in 2,000 years. You’ve taken over Syria.’ With different names, but same thing.”
Meanwhile, Netanyahu, on a visit to Washington, voiced Israel’s apprehensions about Türkiye's growing influence in Syria. He reiterated Israel's desire to prevent Syria from being used as a base for attacks against the Jewish state. “We’ve had neighborly relations with Türkiye that have deteriorated, and we don’t want to see Syria being used by anyone, including Türkiye, as a base for attack in Israel,” Netanyahu said.
“We discussed how we can avoid this conflict in a variety of ways, and I think we can’t have a better interlocutor than the president of the United States for this purpose,” he added.
In response, Trump added, “You know, I have a very, very good relationship with Türkiye and with their leader, and I think we’ll be able to work it out”.
