Trump names key threats to US security in new counterterrorism strategy

07 May 2026 10:45

US President Donald Trump has approved a new national counterterrorism strategy for 2026, in which Iran, transnational drug cartels, Islamist organisations and radical domestic movements are identified as key threats.

The White House said the document expands the definition of terrorism and revises US security priorities. Special emphasis is placed on Iran, which Washington describes as the leading state sponsor of terrorism.

The strategy also calls for increased pressure on cartels and transnational criminal networks in the Western Hemisphere, using military, financial and sanctions tools. US authorities equate cartel activity not only with drug trafficking, but also with human trafficking, illegal migration, and violence that threatens national security.

A separate section of the strategy focuses on domestic extremism, mentioning violent far-left groups and anti-American movements. The administration says it plans to strengthen monitoring of radicalisation and prevent political violence inside the country.

Another key area remains the fight against Islamist organisations, including al-Qaeda and ISIS and their affiliates.

The White House said the new strategy aims to ensure faster responses to terrorist threats and improve coordination between US intelligence agencies and allies.

White House counterterrorism adviser Sebastian Gorka noted that the document is driven by the principle that America is our homeland and must be protected.
