Trump plans India visit, ambassador confirms
US President Donald Trump plans a visit to India ahead of the expected trip by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said.
Gor announced the plan during a forum organised by India Today, stating that the president wants to visit India.
He added that even before the president’s arrival, Secretary Rubio is expected to travel to the country later this year, noting that the visit should take place in the near future.
The ambassador had previously said late last year that Trump could travel to India soon.
On February 2, Trump announced a trade agreement under which US tariffs on Indian goods will fall from 50% to 18%. In exchange, New Delhi committed to stop purchasing Russian oil and ease trade barriers.
India’s purchases of American products could reach $500 billion and include energy resources, coal, technology, agricultural products, and aviation equipment, according to Trump.
