Trump plans major cuts to US diplomatic presence in Africa

20 April 2025 17:02

US President Donald Trump is expected to sign a sweeping executive order next week that will significantly scale back the operations of the US Department of State, including the closure of multiple American embassies across Africa.

The planned directive outlines a major overhaul of US foreign policy infrastructure, calling for the closure of embassies in several African nations and the elimination or downsizing of key bureaus within the Department of State, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.

Targets include offices focusing on climate change, migration, and human rights — areas critics say are vital for global cooperation. Among the most substantial changes is the dissolution of the department overseeing African affairs. In its place, a new Office of the US Special Envoy for African Affairs will be established, reporting directly to the White House National Security Council rather than the State Department itself — signaling a centralization of foreign policy decision-making within the executive branch.

The administration of US President Donald Trump is planning to slash the Department of State’s budget by nearly 50 per cent as part of a broader effort to restructure American foreign policy spending. Even more drastic reductions are reportedly being considered for funding allocated to international organisations, with proposed cuts approaching 90 per cent.
