Trump predicts Canada to scrap tariffs and apologise to US

US President Donald Trump asserted that Canada will abandon all tariffs on American products and apologise to Washington within three to four weeks.

“I think what's going to happen is over the next three or four weeks, they're going to come to us, and they're going to say, ‘We’re going to get rid of all the tariffs.’ [...] They're going to come in, and they're going to say, ‘Sir, we are sorry’,” Trump told reporters at the White House.

According to the American leader, Ottawa has “treated the United States very, very badly” but is now seeking to reach a deal. The US president stressed that Canada depends on the United States for trade and other matters.

“We buy icebreakers. We have a lot of them. We have 11 of them right now under construction. They want to know if they can use our icebreaker. So many things,” the president added.

In 2026, tensions between Washington and Ottawa have centred on a sharp escalation in trade measures. In July, the Trump administration imposed additional 50% tariffs on selected Canadian goods, including automobiles, dairy products and alcoholic beverages, while 

Canada later responded with matching tariffs on $27.6 billion worth of US imports, covering sectors such as steel, dairy, appliances and agricultural equipment.

The dispute intensified in August when Canada suspended trade negotiations with the United States, while both governments continued introducing new tariff measures and exemptions. By September, the US had moved to exclude certain Canadian motor-vehicle products from the US market, further escalating the trade confrontation.
