Trump reaffirms US position on Taiwan, calls for de-escalation with China

US President Donald Trump has reiterated that Washington’s policy on Taiwan remains unchanged, while urging both Taipei and Beijing to “cool down” amid ongoing tensions.

Speaking in an interview on Fox News, Trump said he does not want a scenario that could lead to military escalation in the region.

“I want it to stay the way it is,” he said, warning against moves toward independence that he suggested could trigger conflict involving the United States.

“It’s a risky thing when you go independent […] I’m not looking to have somebody go independent and we’re supposed to travel 9,500 miles to fight a war. I'm not looking for that,” Trump said. “I want them to cool down. I want China to cool down.”
