Trump’s envoy confident in Putin’s "sincere" desire to end Ukraine war

US President's Special Envoy, Steve Witkoff, has stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed a desire to end the war in Ukraine.

In an interview with Fox News, reported by Caliber.Az, the host asked him whether Putin indicated at the Alaska summit that he wants peace and an end to the conflict, Witkoff replied: “Absolutely. There is a peace proposal on the table. He certainly said that, and we hope he will stick to that statement.”

The Fox News host then asked how Witkoff responds to critics who claim “Putin is just playing with you.” Witkoff responded, “I think he has likely made sincere efforts to engage in dialogue. He did this at the Alaska summit. This is a very complex conflict, but the president [Trump] is determined to bring it to an end.”

Witkoff also emphasised that a personal presence from the Russian leader would be necessary for a peace agreement to be reached

“President Putin, during the summit in Alaska, effectively acknowledged that this war would never have happened if President [Trump] had been in office,” he added.

Whitcoff is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian officials in New York later this week, calling the upcoming talks “a very serious signal.” He also noted that the United States maintains daily dialogue with Russia to help resolve the Ukrainian conflict.
