Trump’s envoy lands in Moscow ahead of Ukraine ceasefire deadline
A plane carrying Steve Witkoff, the special envoy of US President Donald Trump, landed at Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport on August 6.
Witkoff was received by Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund and the Kremlin’s special representative for economic cooperation with foreign countries, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
His arrival comes just a day or two before a US-imposed deadline for a ceasefire in Ukraine is due to expire. Reuters had informed on August 5, citing a well-informed source, that Witkoff was expected to travel to Moscow for talks with the Russian leadership.
President Trump recently reiterated that failure to make progress towards a peaceful settlement in Ukraine would trigger a new wave of sanctions.
These would not only target Moscow but also its trading partners that continue to purchase Russian energy resources in defiance of international pressure.
