Axios: Trump's envoy, son-in-law discuss Gaza peace plan with Israeli minister
US Special Envoy for Peacekeeping Missions Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, son-in-law of President Donald Trump, met with Israel’s Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer to discuss Washington’s new proposal for resolving the Gaza conflict, Axios reported, citing White House sources.
According to the report, before Monday’s (September 8) talks, Witkoff and Kushner — who served as a senior adviser to Trump during his first term — met with the US president on September 7 at the US Open tennis final.
The new White House peace proposal, earlier conveyed to both Israel and Hamas, includes the release of all surviving Israeli hostages and the handover of bodies of the deceased in exchange for an immediate ceasefire, to be followed by negotiations on a final settlement.
Sources told Axios that Washington’s plan also calls for a full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, contingent on new governing authorities being able to ensure security. Israel has responded positively to this condition, while Hamas has rejected it, fearing Israel could exploit the clause’s broad interpretation to maintain a military presence in the enclave.
