Trump's first foreign engagement: Celebrating Notre Dame’s rebirth in Paris

03 December 2024 13:12

President-elect Donald J. Trump is set to make his first overseas journey since last month’s election, travelling to Paris this Saturday, December 7, for the grand reopening of the historic Notre Dame Cathedral.

Trump announced the trip on his Truth Social platform, expressing his excitement about the visit, Caliber.Az reports via US media.

"It’s an honour to be able to make public my plans to visit the Magnificent and Historic Notre Dame," he wrote, praising French President Emmanuel Macron’s efforts. "President Macron has done a wonderful job ensuring that Notre Dame has been restored to its full level of glory, and even more so," Trump continued, emphasizing the cathedral’s restoration. "It will be a very special day for all!"

The details of the visit have been in the works for several days, with sources revealing that Trump and Macron have already had at least one phone conversation regarding the trip. Although President Biden will not be attending the reopening, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden is expected to be there, according to the same sources.

Trump, who has largely remained at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida since securing a second term by defeating Vice President Kamala Harris, now prepares to reenter the world stage. Known for his love of grandeur, particularly in the realm of historic construction, this trip underscores his deep appreciation for monumental achievements. The cathedral, which dates back to the 12th century, has undergone significant restoration. Its spire, rib vaulting, flying buttresses, stained-glass windows, and iconic gargoyles shine with renewed brilliance.

In a separate post, Trump praised the restoration efforts of the French government, further cementing the significance of the occasion. "President Macron has done a wonderful job ensuring that Notre Dame has been restored to its full level of glory, and even more so. It will be a very special day for all!" he wrote.

The French government extended an invitation for Trump to attend the December 7 reopening ceremony, and discussions between his team and Macron’s office have been ongoing. However, questions about whether Trump will meet with other foreign leaders during his Paris visit remain unanswered.

Amid political unrest in France, with Prime Minister Michel Barnier facing the prospect of a no-confidence vote later this week, the timing of Trump’s visit adds another layer of intrigue to an already volatile situation.

While he hasn’t ventured overseas since his election victory, Trump has made brief trips within the US, including attending a sporting event in New York and travelling to Texas with entrepreneur Elon Musk to witness the launch of SpaceX’s giant Starship rocket.
