Trump says Denmark failed to counter Russian threat to Greenland for 20 years
US President Donald Trump has once again commented on Greenland, citing what he described as a longstanding “Russian threat” to the island.
In remarks shared on Truth Social, the US leader argued that NATO had spent two decades pushing Denmark to neutralise the Russian threat to Greenland, yet Copenhagen had fallen short, Caliber.Az reports.
“Unfortunately, Denmark has been unable to do anything about it. Now it is time, and it will be done!!!” Trump wrote.
Greenland is an autonomous Danish territory in the Arctic whose strategic location has drawn renewed US interest because the melting ice opens key maritime routes and has heightened great-power competition with Russia and China in the North, prompting NATO allies to strengthen Arctic security cooperation.
President Trump has repeatedly argued the United States needs Greenland for national security and suggested that Denmark cannot adequately defend the island from Russian or Chinese influence, a claim Danish and NATO officials strongly dispute as exaggerated and unfounded.
European leaders have nonetheless reacted with alarm to Trump’s rhetoric — warning that attempts to pressure allies over Greenland could damage transatlantic unity and undermine NATO, as the alliance prioritises collective defence rather than territorial transfers among members.
