Trump says NATO to pay for US weapons sent to Kyiv
U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly considering providing Kyiv with a new military aid package worth hundreds of millions of dollars, according to Politico, citing informed sources.
The funds will come from a reserve approved by the U.S. Congress last year under President Joe Biden. This fund allows the Pentagon to draw weapons from U.S. military stockpiles for Ukraine, the report states. Politico notes that approximately $3.8 billion remains in this fund.
The aid package, which was paused earlier this month, reportedly includes 30 Patriot surface-to-air missiles and hundreds of precision-guided weapons that Ukraine uses for offensive and defensive purposes.
According to a source familiar with the matter, about 8,000 rounds of 155mm howitzer ammunition and 250 guided rocket artillery systems have already started arriving in Ukraine, but it remains unclear if and when the Patriot missiles will be delivered.
Politico links the possible shipments to Trump’s upcoming announcement to NBC News, where he said he would make a “major statement” on Russia on July 14.
The White House chief also said that under an agreement between the U.S., NATO, and Ukraine, NATO will pay for the American weapons sent to Kyiv.
“We send weapons to NATO, and NATO is going to reimburse the full cost of those weapons,” Trump explained.
