Trump says US elections have become "complete mess"

07 August 2026 18:39

US President Donald Trump on August 7 described elections in the United States as rigged and  mess, while renewing his call for mandatory photo ID requirements for voters.

Speaking in an interview with Punchbowl News, Trump said he intended to push for compulsory photo identification at polling stations.

"The elections are rigged in this country. The elections are a mess in this country. And that was proven in 2020, and it's been proven elsewhere."

Arguing for stricter voter identification rules, Trump added:

"When it came to shoveling snow, did you see that? You had to get two forms of identification to get licensed to shovel snow. But to go in and vote, you don't need anything. No, it's no good."

Trump also said he was unconcerned by the prospect of impeachment, describing himself as one of the "greatest leaders in the country's history".

He again accused Democrats of supporting "open borders" and "mutilating surgeries" on children, while pledging to fight for victory in the upcoming elections.

Turning to trade, Trump criticised the United States' $39 billion trade deficit with Switzerland, arguing that Washington effectively helps sustain the country's economic advantages.

"We make many countries elite countries. Take a look at Switzerland. We have a $39 billion deficit. I can wipe out that deficit in one stroke of the pen and they're no longer an elite country... All I have to do is say, 'I don't want any of your watches. I don't want any of your goods.' And we save ourselves."
