Trump sparks tensions with Italy, hints at US troop reassessment
US President Donald Trump has suggested that Washington may reconsider its military presence in Italy, while criticizing Rome’s role in past security cooperation.
Trump made the comments in an interview with Italian media in which he questioned Italy’s level of support during a previous conflict involving Iran, Caliber.Az reports.
“Italy was not there when we needed it. And I have always supported Italy, as has my country,” Trump said.
The remarks come amid broader discussions about the future deployment of US forces in Europe.
Trump also indicated that a review of the US military presence in Italy remains a possibility, though no formal decision has been announced.
The comments follow his earlier announcement of plans to reduce the number of American troops stationed in Germany, part of a broader reassessment of overseas deployments.
The United States maintains significant military installations across Italy, which has long been a key NATO ally and strategic hub for American operations in Europe and the Mediterranean.
