Trump to gather top congressmen ahead of government funding deadline

On Monday, September 29, U.S. President Donald Trump plans to meet with four top members of Congress at the White House, according to The Associated Press, citing an administration spokesperson and other sources familiar with the negotiations.

The meeting comes a day before the federal government funding deadline. Without approved funding, a government shutdown could begin at 12:01 a.m. ET on Wednesday, October 1.

Attending the meeting will be:

• House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana)

• Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-South Dakota)

• House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-New York)

• Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York)

A budget vote is scheduled for Tuesday, September 30, and if no action is taken, a government shutdown will commence at the abovementioned date.
