Trump to meet Gulf leaders as UN summit gets under way

US President Donald Trump is expected to meet representatives of Gulf states as world leaders gather in New York for the United Nations General Assembly's annual General Debate.

The debate opens on September 22, with speeches expected from Trump, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

Trump's meetings with Gulf representatives come as the war with Iran approaches its seven-month mark and continues to affect the wider region.

Iranian attacks and an escalation involving Houthi forces are threatening cities, US bases and key oil and shipping routes, according to the report.

Trump is also due to hold separate bilateral meetings with Burnham and Venezuela's acting President Delcy Rodríguez. The meeting with Rodríguez would be the first in-person meeting between the two leaders.

The UK, France and Canada are expected to hold talks on the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The three countries recognised Palestine as a state a year ago and have recently announced further joint measures against Israeli settlement construction in the West Bank, including import bans and sanctions.
