Trump urges Democrats to drop charges after recounting assassination attempt

19 July 2024 15:50

Following a lengthy and grave recounting of the assassination attempt that nearly cost him his life, US ex-President Donald Trump suddenly shifted his tone.

He called on Democrats to drop the criminal cases against him in order to unify the US, Caliber.Az reports citing the foreign media.

“They should act immediately,” Trump added.

Starting his speech with this message highlights Trump’s ongoing preoccupation with the legal issues that have plagued him for the past three years. Trump leveraged his broad national platform to commend US District Judge Aileen Cannon — “a highly respected federal judge” — for dismissing the criminal case against him in Florida, which involved accusations of stealing classified national security secrets and obstructing efforts to recover them. Special counsel Jack Smith is currently appealing Cannon’s decision.

Donald Trump is accused of mishandling classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. The charges include unlawfully retaining national security secrets and obstructing government efforts to reclaim them.

Trump is charged with attempting to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia. The indictment includes allegations of pressuring state officials to change the vote count and engaging in fraudulent activities. Trump faces allegations of making hush-money payments to silence claims of extramarital affairs during the 2016 presidential campaign. The charges include falsifying business records to cover up these payments. Trump is implicated in a federal case concerning alleged efforts to disrupt the 2020 presidential election certification process. This includes accusations of inciting the January 6 Capitol riot and attempting to interfere with the electoral process.

These criminal cases have substantial legal, political, and personal implications for Trump.
