Trump warns another shutdown would make Democrats look bad

US President Donald Trump said that the Democratic Party does not want another government shutdown, as it would harm their image.

Speaking in an interview with Fox News journalist Jacqui Heinrich, a segment of which was posted on her X page, Trump noted that the US had strong GDP growth, Caliber.Az reports.

“I think it's going fine. We had a big GDP, I lost a point and a half because of the last [shutdown]. So we'll see what happens. I think the Democrats don't want it to happen. Makes them look very bad, but it's not a good thing for the country. So hopefully enough people will use their heads,” the American leader emphasised.

In recent months, the US faced renewed budget tensions that led to a partial government shutdown at the end of January 2026 after Congress failed to pass full funding for the new fiscal year by the January 31 deadline — primarily due to disputes over Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and immigration‑enforcement funding provisions.

Several federal agencies, including Defence, Health and Human Services, Transportation and Housing, saw their funding lapse, leaving many federal workers furloughed or working without pay while essential services continued on contingency plans.

Lawmakers from both parties weighed short‑term extensions to give more time for negotiations, though political divisions remained sharp as Democrats insisted on oversight reforms in exchange for supporting DHS funding.

This shutdown followed the lengthy 2025 shutdown that lasted over a month due to earlier budget impasses, leaving a mark on public services and economic activity.
