Media: Türkiye intensifies efforts to combat terrorism in Syria
Türkiye continues to closely monitor the situation in Syria, with a focus on eliminating terrorism from the region.
Ankara is particularly attentive to the steps taken to implement the agreement reached between the YPG/SDF terrorist organization and the interim administration, prioritizing the completion of this process as quickly as possible, Caliber.Az reports citing Turkish media.
In its ongoing fight against ISIS, a key ally of the YPG, Türkiye has intensified military and strategic actions. As part of the broader cooperation between Syria and neighboring governments, including Türkiye, an agreement was reached on March 9 to establish a Joint Operations Centre specifically to combat ISIS. The modalities and operational details of this center are expected to be finalized in the coming days.
The SDF, an umbrella armed group led by the US-backed YPG, currently controls one-third of Syria's territory, including most of the country's oil and gas fields. The YPG uses the name SDF to give itself an air of legitimacy. The group, which is the Syrian branch of the PKK terror group, had refused to join the new Syrian Defence Ministry following the fall of the Assad regime in Syria.
The move reflects Türkiye’s continued commitment to addressing the threat posed by both ISIS and groups it considers terrorist organizations within Syria. Türkiye has long been a key player in efforts to stabilize the region and eliminate extremist groups that threaten both regional and international security. The establishment of the Joint Operations Centre signals a stronger collaborative effort among the involved nations to confront the ongoing security challenges in Syria.
