Two killed, one injured in Israeli UAV attack on Damascus road SOHR data

09 July 2024 19:24

An unmanned aerial vehicle, likely of Israeli origin, conducted an airstrike on a vehicle near the 4th Division checkpoint on the Damascus-Beirut highway, in the Judeidat-Yabous area.

The targeted vehicle, identified as belonging to Lebanese Hezbollah, was severely damaged by fire during the attack, Caliber.Az reports citing the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).

Two people were killed and a third Syrian person was seriously injured in an attack.

Since the Syrian civil war erupted in 2011, Israel has conducted hundreds of strikes within the country, primarily targeting army positions and Iran-backed fighters, including those from Lebanon's Hezbollah.

These strikes intensified following the October 7 attack on Israel by the Palestinian militant group Hamas, which ignited conflict in the Gaza Strip. However, the frequency of strikes decreased after an April 1 attack, attributed to Israel, hit the Iranian consular building in Damascus, significantly heightening regional tensions.

Israeli airstrikes in Syria have reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least 24 Hezbollah fighters since the outbreak of the Gaza war.

Last month, an Israeli airstrike targeted a convoy of tankers entering Lebanon from Syria, as reported by the Observatory, resulting in three fatalities according to Hezbollah, and reportedly occurring in the Hermel area of eastern Lebanon.

Earlier on July 9, the Syrian Defence Ministry reported an Israeli airstrike causing damage but no casualties near the coastal city of Baniyas. The Observatory noted that Iranian military advisers were stationed in the area.

Syria's ongoing conflict, which began in 2011 following a government crackdown on anti-government protests, has led to the deaths of more than half a million people and displaced millions more.
