Two people killed, several injured in shooting at US university

A shooting occurred on the campus of Brown University in Rhode Island, leaving two people dead and nine others injured, according to the Associated Press.

The incident took place near the seven-story Barus & Holley building, which houses the engineering departments and the physics department. Graduation exams were in progress at the time of the attack.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley reported that a suspect had been detained; however, police later clarified that the individual is not connected to the shooting. According to Deputy Police Chief Timothy O’Hara, the shooter was wearing black clothing and possibly a camouflage mask. Security cameras recorded the shooter leaving the building, but the face on the footage is unidentifiable.

University President Christina Paxson stated that ten students sustained gunshot wounds, and one additional person was injured by shrapnel. Nine of the injured were taken to the hospital, with one in critical condition. Hospital reports indicate that six patients require intensive care, while two are in stable condition.

Police have begun searches across the university campus.
