Two powerful NATO radars to be deployed in Romania

24 November 2022 10:01

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis officially informed parliament on November 23 about the deployment of two NATO radars in the country.

TASS reports citing the Agerpres agency that according to the president, Spain provided radar TPS-43 which will be installed and integrated into the NATO Air Defence and Missile Defence System (NATINADS) in the territory of Romania, while the US Marine Corps intends to deploy radar TPS-80 in the country, close to the border with Ukraine. The Spanish and US partners have conducted reconnaissance to determine the best locations for their deployment in consultation with Romanian military authorities, he noted. These radars will enable the detection of air targets in eastern Ukraine, as well as in the central and western parts of the Black Sea basin.

Johannis also informed the senators and MPs about Romania's increased participation in the EUFOR Althea operation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where a Romanian manoeuvre company of up to 150 soldiers with the necessary equipment, weapons, and ammunition will be permanently deployed.

Parliamentarians could not grant President Johannis' request to form a NATO battlegroup on Romanian territory under the command of France because of problems with the electronic voting system, so the issue was postponed to the next session.
