Two US Navy pilots eject safely after training jet crash in Mississippi
Two US Navy pilots safely ejected after the training jet they were flying crashed Tuesday afternoon, May 27, in eastern Mississippi, according to officials.
The aircraft, identified as a T-45C Goshawk, went down at approximately 12:30 p.m. local time on private farmland in Noxubee County, the Naval Air Training Command said in a statement, as per US media.
Both pilots aboard the jet ejected safely and were transported to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation. Their condition has not been disclosed. Local emergency services, along with US military personnel, responded to the crash site.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the incident, but no further details were immediately available.
The aircraft was assigned to Training Air Wing One, based in Meridian, Mississippi.
According to the Naval Air Training Command, the T-45C Goshawk is a tandem-seat aircraft used to train pilots for both the US Navy and the Marine Corps.
The jet was originally manufactured by McDonnell Douglas, with each aircraft costing approximately $17 million. The T-45C entered operational service in 1997. McDonnell Douglas was later acquired by Boeing in the late 1990s.
