Two US tourists injured in knife attack near Athens’ Acropolis

Two US tourists were injured in a knife attack near the entrance to the Acropolis in Athens on July 21, Greek media reported.

A man allegedly threatened several passers-by with a knife near the landmark at around 8 a.m., prompting a witness to alert police, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.

The suspect is said to have attacked a couple before officers intervened and detained him. Authorities have not yet officially confirmed all details of the incident.

Greek public broadcaster ERTNews reported that the suspect was believed to be a 60-year-old man with mental health conditions who was known to police.

According to multiple media reports, the male tourist suffered a serious leg injury, while the woman was wounded in the arm. Both were taken to hospital by ambulance and were not in life-threatening condition.
